Alex Weir (aka Smex) is an artist and illustrator based in Glasgow. His practice explores ideas of community, connection and identity through painting, printmaking, drawing and bookmaking. Smex is particulalry inspired by the mundane and the everyday, and especially anything related to food. Through a consistent and intuitive approach to art making, Smex reacts to current events and situations to create playful imagery and storytelling - he has spent much of the past year 'at home on furlough' and this unusual period is humorously depicted through his 'daily drawings' and lino prints. Smex's work has been featured on platforms such as It's Nice That and People of Print; in the past year he has also worked collaboratively with Norwegain eyewear brand Kaibosh and Japanese food and culture magazine MCNAI.
